15 games like Fortnite that you can switch to during pandemic

Fortnite is one of the world's most popular games, and it's simple to see why. The player base is vast, the players receive regular content updates, which helped define the genre of battle royale. While the onslaught of new content will keep you from getting bored, you need a break sometimes. If too many times you've had your builds ruined by a Choppa, or you're tired of seeing the dance "Take the L" after getting beaten, it may be time to try a new game, if only for a bit.

When jumping into a game, players have to choose between one of 5 specialized classes: hunter, warrior, assassin, engineer, or mage. Although the game has a handful of weapons, players can fight it out with long swords, crossbows, and staff as well. There are many fights around Forges, workshops scattered all over the map that allows players to break down unwanted objects and create more potent weapons.

Project Darwin (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Darwin Pro ject has a more fleshed-out world, although Fortnite d oesn't owe players an excuse for its 100-man deathmatch. Overpopulation has contributed to the tradition of reality TV-style royal fight competitions in this game's dystopian future to keep the crowds controlled, just like The Hunger Games. Up to 10 players will support a match, and the objective is the same as any battle royale: to outplay your opponent and be the last player left standing.

Overwatch (Switch, Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Overwatch is not a royal fighting game, which means that for those tired of choosing where to land, the team-based shooter can be a nice break. Each match is a 6v6 brawl based on an objective that pushes some interesting characters against each other. The game's 30 characters are divided into four categories: Offense, Defense, Support and Tank. Although creating a team made up of all run-n-gun characters such as sharp-shooting cowboy McCree and cyborg ninja Genji can sound fun, a team needs to be balanced to come out on top. For a well-drafted squad, support characters such as Mercy and defensive specialists such as the Chinese climatologist and explorer Mei, who freezes enemies with an Endothermic Blaster, are just as vital.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Xbox One, PS4, PC, iOS)

You won many Victory Royales on Fortnite Island, but can you secure a chicken dinner for yourself? Each PUBG match begins with 100 players jumping onto a giant, deserted island with nothing but shirts on their backs from a cargo plane. The map is enormous and it takes a long time to explore, so when you get gunned down without seeing your opponent, it is particularly brutal. There are no architectural mechanics to protect you here — you could find yourself in the final safe zone trying to locate the smallest bit of cover beside a small boulder or bush. Although each battle royale is crucial to the shrinking safe zone, PUBG also contains dangerous red zones and dynamically selected map areas bombed during the game. Don't get trapped in one.

Call of Duty: Warzone (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Th e Call of Duty series finally re-entered the battle royale world with Warzone, a free-to-play mode tied to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In the Warzone edition of battle royale, the standard 100-person limit is increased to 150 to fit the three-person team set-up. Any familiarity with game mechanics, weapons, rewards, and loadouts from Call of Duty will serve you here well. Although you do not need Modern Warfare to play Warzone, in their battle royale loadouts, players who have been playing at the regular version can use weapon skins and modifications.

Warzone's 1v1 gulag battles are one exciting addition to the battle royale scene. You are captured and sent to the gulag if you die early in a match, where you can win another chance at survival by outplaying another lost player. You're left with just a pistol when you respawn, so get ready to loot yourself again.

H1Z1: Battle Royale (PS4, PC)

Although the start of the battle royale boom is often accredited to Fortnite, H1N1 is where the genre began to gain momentum. A battle royale mode developed for H1Z1 was King of the Hill and quickly became H1Z1's most successful mod. This battle royale game involves 150 players fighting either solo, in a duo, or as a team of five players to the death, finding a sweet spot between PUBG's realism and Fortnite's more carefree vibe. On PC, H1Z1 also features Auto Royale, a battle royale with the cars of H1Z1; it's basically a derby game of demolition.

While H1Z1 might not be as refined as AAA battle royales, it still has an active base of players and a place in the history of battle royales.

Apex Legends (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Apex Legends is a freely available-to-play battle royale that incorporates elements such as Overwatch of Fortnite and hero shooters. In order to battle it out with other teams, players select from a roster of 12 "legends," each with their own collection o f special abilities, and fall into a giant map loaded with weapons, armor, and other objects. A charismatic robot from the Titanfall series, Pathfinder, can identify potential safe zones and has a grappling hook for improved agility. At the same time, Gibraltar is a heavily protected character designed throughout each match to be rugged in gunfights.

Battlerite Royale (PC)

There are more than enough battle royale games out there that incorporate a twist to establish a recognizable title, but some break the mold entirely. On the battle royale train, Top-down MOBA Battlerite jumped and was able to do so without losing what makes either genre perfect. You move your selected fantasy Champion as the circle closes in, finds the treasure, and conquers other players with arms, spells, and traps. The art system is similar to Fortnite, but more than fast-paced shootouts, good gameplay depends on tactics and knowing your character.

We can't tell you that Fortnite should take a serious break. We love the game as much as anybody, after all, and there are so many updates every week with cool new challenges. Still, beyond the reach of watching grade-schoolers learn to floss, there's plenty more to see and discover. These choices are sure to fill the void for the duration of your detox from the game; whatever features appeal to you most in Fortnite.
