When Should You Use VSync, And What Is It?

When Should You Use VSync, And What Is It?

People spend a lot of money on pricey PC gear to make gaming as immersive as possible. However, difficulties like screen tearing and frequent hardware faults might impair the experience. Game setting VSync resolves this problem. VSync is a synchronization system for displays, video games, and graphics processors (GPU).

Let’s explore VSync in more detail and examine its significance.

VSync technology: what is it?

VSync, often known as vertical sync, is a graphics technique that synchronizes a game’s framerate with the refresh rate of a gaming display. GPU makers initially created this technology to combat screen tearing, which occurs when your screen simultaneously shows bits of several frames. Exhibits may thus look divided along a horizontal axis. Tearing happens when the number of frames per second and the GPU refresh rate is out of sync.

While screen tearing can occur at any moment, it is most noticeable when playing fast-paced games with frequent rate adjustments in vertical components like buildings and trees. Tearing causes viewers to lose immersion and makes video games appear unsightly.

This is fixed by VSync, which restricts the graphic card’s refresh rate to the frame rate, preventing more excellent frames per second than the display can handle. To prevent viewers from seeing tears, it employs page flipping and doubles buffering to display frames after a complete refresh cycle.

VSync Causes More Issues Than It Addresses

Although VSync is a guaranteed solution for screen tearing, performance and responsiveness are sacrificed. Let’s examine VSync’s two primary purposes to better understand why. The GPU frame rate is first slowed to correspond with the display’s refresh rate. Second, it adjusts GPU frame pacing to coincide with the monitor’s refresh rate.

Do you note how the GPU output is slowed down in both VSync techniques to match the static display refresh rate? That particular point is crucial. A GPU produces frames at a pace inversely proportional to the complexity of the displayed in-game scene, while the monitor refreshes at regular intervals.

The GPU cannot send the most current frame to the monitor unless it is forced to synchronize its frame pace with the refresh rate. This is referred to as input lag by gamers, who feel that the material displayed on the monitor follows their real controller inputs. Because of this input latency, the crosshair significantly lags behind your accurate mouse inputs in fast-paced FPS games.

Does it matter that much?

VSync helps only with screen tearing, and it only helps by limiting fps when necessary. VSync can be pretty helpful if your display can’t match the frame rates of a particular game.

VSync, unlike HDR, cannot raise your resolution, colors, or brightness levels. It’s a preventive technology that puts less emphasis on developing improvements and more on stopping a particular issue. Additionally, it often lowers performance.

Your frame rate may suffer if frames must be fully drawn before being displayed, and at best, your frame rate is only as fast as your display’s refresh rate. It can also impact your competitive performance in games where more excellent frame rates can lessen input latency.
